  a lil'bit about our Olives

Adramytiani-Fragolia

  • The “adramytiani” or “fragolia” olives are native to the East Aegean, including Lesvos isle and Asia Minor and are named after the area of Adramyttio, an ancient Aeolic city and bishopric in Aeolis.

  • This variety takes up 20%-30% of the island’s olive tree total and is found in the northern and north-eastern parts of Lesvos.

  • The olive matures between the months of November and December and has an olive oil content of 20% to 25%.

  • It renders an especially aromatic olive oil defined by the lightness of its texture and the fullness of its flavor.

Kolovi-Mytiliana

  • The “kolovi” or “Mytilinia” olives, are the most common olive tree variety on the isle of Lesvos

  • It amounts to 70% of the island’s olive tree total and grows in the southern and eastern regions of Lesvos Isle.

  • The tree does not thrive in high altitude, nor does it require the use of special cultivation techniques or a hand-fed nutrient-enriched soil. It does not grow large but it does have irregular branches with comparatively broad leaves.

  • The olive oil content reaches 21%-25% provided the olives have grown sufficiently and under favorable conditions within the few-weeks the tree is in bloom.

  • This variety provides olive oil of an excellent quality with an intense aroma and a light taste, and therefore ranked among the best oil-producing varieties of Greek olive trees.

Protected Geographical Indication (PGI)

The Olive Oil produced on Lesβos isle has been officially recognized by the European Union (regulation 1107/96) as a product with a Protected Geographical Indication.

Through a natural combination of unique weather conditions, the mineral-rich soil, the volcanic elements that heavily contribute to the richness of the soil, the North Aegean sea, the olive tree varieties as well as, on a lesser scale, the human factor, all combine and play a key role in the uniqueness and high-quality of our olive oil.
